Our Scout Group runs the new Scouting Ireland Knife Training Program for Youth Members.
We have Scouters who have completed their Level 2 Fixed Blade Knife Training which allows them to teach Youth Members how to use a fixed blade knife.
This Knife Training Course gives Youth Members and their Scouters the knowledge and skills to safely use fixed blade knives.
Requirements:
Training can be arranged at your Scout den. You must have a suitable indoor space that has enough room for all participants to be an arms length and a half away from other participants. The maximum number of Youth Members who can participate in the training is 10. At least two Scouters from your group must be present throughout the training. At least one of these Scouters should participate in the training so that your group can safely monitor ongoing knife usage. Ideally one of these Scouters should have REC3 first aid training or higher. This is not a requirement as our trainers have REC3 but the more first aiders the better.
Your Youth Members must have their own fixed blade knives – pen knives and folding blade knives cannot be used. We highly recommend Youth Members get the Morakniv (Mora) Companion knife. It is a robust knife, perfect for Scouts, durable, easy to sharpen, and great value at €16.
Scouters who participate in the training are NOT permitted to teach the Level 2 Fixed Blade Knife Training to Youth Members. They can however supervise and direct Youth Members who have completed the training.
